Special Funds

  • Endowment for the Future
    Building on the success of the $60 million Dare To Dream Campaign supporting the construction of Levine Children’s Hospital, campaign steering committee leadership has launched the first phase of a $100 million endowment. Seeded by commitments totaling $7 million from Sandra and Leon Levine, the committee has now raised over $5 million in matching gifts and seeks to complete fundraising for the Levine challenge in the near future. The resources generated by the Endowment for the Future will assist the hospital in expanding existing programs, creating new programs, and attracting highly skilled and talented new physicians and healthcare professionals to Charlotte.

General Funds

  • Adaptive Sports & Adventures Program (ASAP) Fund
    Underwrites the annual activities of Carolinas Rehabilitation's Adaptive Sports & Adventures Program (ASAP). The ASAP Program offers outdoor recreation and sports activities for disabled youth and adults from throughout the Charlotte region. Activities include sailing and water skiing, wheelchair basketball, hand cycling, rugby, and many other sports and recreation opportunities.
  • Anna's Gift Fund
    This fund honors the memory of Anna Jo Evans and is dedicated to providing perinatal bereavement support for families whose infants have been cared for by the Maternity Units at Carolinas Medical Center. Support from the Fund provides patient teaching and educational materials, photographic equipment and materials to produce keepsake boxes for families, and grief support-related educational programs for OB/GYN nursing staff.

  • Carolinas Pastoral Care Endowment
    Initiated by grateful patient families and local church groups, this endowment provides annual support for educational and outreach programs conducted by Carolinas HealthCare System's Pastoral Care Department, which provides pastoral services for CHS hospitals and also serves as the only chaplaincy education and residency program in the Charlotte region.
  • Carolinas Poison Center Fund
    Supports educational and outreach programs conducted by the CMC's Carolinas Poison Center, which, as North Carolina's designated state poison center, provides 24-hour poisoning-related consultations to callers from throughout the state.
  • Carolinas Sports Medicine Fund
    This Fund advances and sustains unique and meaningful activities of the Sports Medicine division of Carolinas HealthCare System, including the annual “Heart of a Champion” health and cardiac screening event for thousands of high school athletes, the Sports Medicine fellowship program operated by CMC’s Department of Family Medicine, the “Train the Trainer” program for area high school athletic trainers, and other related community outreach activities in the field of Sports Medicine.
  • LifeShare Of The Carolinas Fund
    Supports the organ donor education and organ procurement activities conducted by LifeShare Of The Carolinas.
  • MedCenter Air Fund
    Supports equipment enhancements and programmatic improvements for MedCenter Air, CMC's fleet of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, which extend the Hospital's emergency care throughout the region.

Cancer Funds

 
  • Blumenthal Cancer Center Endowment
    Started with a gift from the Blumenthal Foundation, this perpetual endowment provides annual support for a variety of patient support, outreach, education and clinical research initiatives associated with the Blumenthal Cancer Center at Carolinas Medical Center.
  • Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund
    Initiated by grateful patient families, this fund chiefly supports patient education and outreach programs for CMC breast cancer patients, as well as CMC clinical research and treatment initiatives associated with breast cancer.
  • Carolinas Melanoma & Immunotherapy Fund
    Supports research and education programs designed to advance the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of melanoma. A chief focus of the fund is on advancing research in the area of immunotherapy, one of the only effective treatments for metastatic melanoma and certain related cancers.
  • Carolinas Ovarian Cancer Research Fund
    Supports scientific and clinical research activities conducted by physician faculty members of the Gynecologic Oncology Division of CMC's Blumenthal Cancer Center.
  • KEEP POUNDING® Fund
    Honoring the late Carolina Panthers player and coach Sam Mills and current player Mark Fields, the KEEP POUNDING® Fund advances and supports research efforts at Carolinas Medical Center related to a wide variety of cancers, focusing especially on bringing the latest, most advanced experimental cancer trials to CMC. The Fund may also underwrite upgrades to equipment and clinical research facilities, as well as assist in funding costs for specialized research nurses and clinical coordination, ensuring that local patients from all walks of life have access to a staff of highly-trained caregivers, augmented by researchers and related support programs. 100% of donations to the Fund will be directed to cancer research programs at CMC.
  • McKay Urology Research Fund
    Provides substantial annual support for prostate cancer and other urology-related research activities conducted by CMC Urology faculty members in conjunction with researchers at CMC's Cannon Research Center.
  • Merrill Lynch “Families Helping Families” Fund
    This Fund was created by Merrill Lynch associates in the Charlotte area to directly benefit a variety of different programs of distinctive excellence at Carolinas Medical Center, potentially ranging from Blumenthal Cancer Center to Levine Children’s Hospital to the Carolinas Heart and Vascular Institute. The area that will benefit in any given year will be determined by Merrill Lynch and its associates who will also play a role in specifically designating how funds will be expended. For 2008, Blumenthal Cancer Center has been designated to be the beneficiary of Merrill Lynch fundraising.
  • Pediatric Cancer Fund
    Supports patient/family support activities, capital improvements, and research programs associated with Carolinas Medical Center's Pediatric Oncology division.
  • The Rare & Complex Cancers Fund
    This Fund is dedicated to the advancement of patient support programs, education, and research associated with the Rare & Complex Cancers Program at Carolinas Medical Center and its Blumenthal Cancer Center. Such cancers would include but not be limited to diseases such as sarcomas, hepatobiliary cancer, neuro-oncologic diseases, esophageal cancer, mesothelioma, endocrine cancer, and other rare and complex forms of cancer. Contributions to the Rare & Complex Cancers Program will support a variety of programs such as: pilot funding for new Blumenthal Cancer Center nursing or clinical social work personnel who will assist patients with navigating the complex treatment and recovery process, funding for cancer patient and family support groups, and advancement of clinical research programs for rare and complex cancers.
  • Sonia Hanko Wyatt Ovarian Cancer Research Endowment
    Initiated in 2002 by family and friends of the late Mrs. Sonia Hanko Wyatt, this substantial endowment provides annual support for ovarian cancer research programs conducted by CMC gynecologic oncology physicians in conjunction with researchers at CMC's Cannon Research Center.

Cardiovascular Funds

  • Carolinas Cardiovascular Health & Rehabilitation Fund
    This Fund enables CMC to sustain the growth and development of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program while expanding the scope of its cardiovascular health research programs. In addition, the Fund supports specialized education opportunities for caregivers and advances the growth of community education programs conducted by the Carolinas Medical Center.
  • Carolinas Heart and Vascular Institute Fund
    Initiated in the mid 1980's at the time of the inception of the Heart Institute, this fund supports capital improvements, programs, and patient education within CHI.
  • Joining Hearts Pediatric Cardiology Fund
    Supports the advancement of pediatric cardiology programs and research at Carolinas Medical Center and Levine Children’s Hospital. While promoting educational opportunities for caregivers and physicians, the fund also positively influences the level of care provided to children suffering from congenital pediatric cardiac conditions. Additionally, the fund helps to provide support programs for families of pediatric cardiac patients.
  • Levine Cardiac Kids Fund
    This Fund benefits Levine Cardiac Kids, a support group for children with Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) and their families. This group serves as a forum for sharing experiences and building relationships; seeks to educate families on pertinent issues related to heart-health, treatments, and coping strategies; and creates awareness of CHD within the community.
  • Nalibotsky Family Heart Transplant Fund
    Established by the family of heart transplant patient Philip Nalibotsky in 2003, this fund chiefly supports education and patient outreach activities to advance CMC’s Heart Transplant Program.
     

CHS Facility Funds

  • Carolinas Medical Center - Mercy Fund
    Supports capital enhancements, programmatic improvements, and special education and outreach opportunities benefiting patients of Carolinas Medical Center - Mercy.
  • Carolinas Medical Center - Pineville Fund
    Supports capital enhancements, programmatic improvements, and special education and outreach opportunities benefiting patients of Carolinas Medical Center - Pineville.
  • Carolinas Medical Center - University Fund
    Supports capital enhancements, programmatic improvements, and special education and outreach opportunities benefiting patients of Carolinas Medical Center - University.
  • Carolinas Rehabilitation Fund
    Provides annual support of special professional education opportunities for Carolinas Rehabilitation nursing and therapy staff. The Fund also provides funding for patient/family support and community outreach activities.
  • Huntersville Oaks Fund
    Supports capital enhancements, programmatic improvements, and special education and support programs for residents and staff of the Huntersville Oaks / Brookwood long term care facility.
  • Sardis Oaks Fund
    Supports capital enhancements, programmatic improvements, and special education and support programs for residents and staff of the Sardis Oaks long term care facility.

Education & Research Funds

 

  • Behavioral Health Education & Research Fund
    Supports research studies and faculty/staff education programs conducted by the Carolinas Medical Center - Randolph behavioral health hospital.
  • Carolinas Transplant Center Fund
    Chiefly supports research and education programs associated with liver, kidney, heart and other transplant programs of the Transplant Center at Carolinas Medical Center.
  • CCHS Advancement Fund: Nursing & Allied Health Education
    One of the largest nursing education programs in North Carolina,Carolinas College of Health Sciences is the largest hospital based college in the state. Student scholarships as well as equipment, supplies, and faculty support are made possible by gifts to The Carolinas College of Health Sciences.
  • Emergency Medicine Research & Education Fund
    Supports research studies and resident/faculty education programs conducted by CMC's Department of Emergency Medicine. This fund also provides support for demonstration and training exercises of CMC's MED-1 mobile hospital.
  • F. H. Sammy Ross Trauma Center Endowment
    Initiated in 2001, this endowment fund provides substantial annual support for research studies, treatment initiatives, and educational programs at CMC's Sammy Ross Trauma Center.
  • Oral Medicine Institute Fund
    This endowment fund provides annual support for the important research and education activities of Carolinas Medical Center's Department of Oral Medicine.
  • Orthopaedic Research Advancement Fund
    Supports capital improvements, specialized equipment, educational conferences, resident research studies, and other items designed to advance the research efforts of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Carolinas Medical Center.
  • W. Duke Kimbrell Rehabilitation Research Endowment
    Initiated in 2009 with a $300,000 “challenge” pledge from Mr. W. Duke Kimbrell, this Endowment advances ground-breaking research programs conducted by faculty physicians associated with Carolinas Rehabilitation hospitals and outpatient facilities. Currently all gifts to the Endowment are being matched 100% by the W. Duke Kimbrell Family Foundation.
  • Surgical Research Endowment
    Supports research studies and resident/faculty education programs conducted by CMC's Department of General Surgery. Notable funding over the years has come from memorials and bequests honoring past faculty members. 
  • Valya E. Visser Endowment for Pediatric Education
    This Endowment honors Valya E. Visser, M.D., past chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Carolinas Medical Center, for her insightful leadership and commitment to the care and healing of children. Donations will help enhance education and research opportunities for pediatric residents and faculty at CMC and the new Levine Children's Hospital. 
  • Wallace C. Nunley, Jr. Endowment for Women’s Health
    Provides annual support for resident research and education programs, as well as notable faculty educational endeavors associated with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Carolinas Medical Center.

Emergency Medicine/Trauma Funds

  • Emergency Medicine Research & Education Fund
    Supports research studies and resident/faculty education programs conducted by CMC's Department of Emergency Medicine. This fund also provides support for demonstration and training exercises of CMC's MED-1 mobile hospital.
  • F. H. Sammy Ross Trauma Center Endowment
    Initiated in 2001, this endowment fund provides substantial annual support for research studies, treatment initiatives, and educational programs at CMC's Sammy Ross Trauma Center.

Neurosciences Funds

  • Carolinas ALS Research Fund
    Supports clinical and scientific research activities directed toward enhanced diagnosis and treatment of ALS. All research is conducted under the direction of the Medical Director of CMC's Carolinas Neuromuscular / ALS-MDA Center.
  • Carolinas ALS Endowment
    Initiated in the mid 1990's in an effort to create an ALS Center in Charlotte in association with CMC, this perpetual endowment provides substantial annual operating support for treatment, patient support, education, and research programs conducted by the Carolinas Neuromuscular / ALS-MDA Center at Carolinas Medical Center.
  • Carolinas Brain Tumor Fund
    Initiated in 2003, this fund seeks to advance brain tumor research and innovative treatment programs conducted by physicians associated with the Neuroscience Institute at Carolinas Medical Center.
  • Carolinas Muscular Dystrophy Research Endowment
    Initiated in 2003, this fund is dedicated to research for select types of muscular dystrophy, particularly Limb/Girdle, which is currently being conducted at CMC's Cannon Research Center.
  • Carolinas Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders Endowment
    This endowment was initiated in 2007 to sustain and enhance the comprehensive treatment, education, and research programs at CMC’s New Center for Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders. The Foundation and volunteer fundraising leadership are seeking to build a $5 million endowment in order to support dedicated physical and speech therapy positions, patient counseling and support efforts, translation research programs, and alliance with complementary and alternative medicine providers. A $1 million challenge gift from John Crosland, Jr., will be “triggered” once the first $4 million is raised.
  • Carolinas MS Fund
    This fund seeks to involve local families who have been touched by multiple sclerosis (MS) in fundraising to support a broad array of clinical research and innovative treatment initiatives conducted by the MS Center at Carolinas Medical Center.
  • The Mike Rucker ALS Care Fund
    This fund was named in honor of former Carolina Panthers player Mike Rucker, who has been a long-time fundraising champion and advocate for the Carolinas Neuromuscular/ALS-MDA Center. This Fund supports respite care-giving for ALS patients and their families served by The Carolinas Neuromuscular/ALS-MDA Center at Carolinas Medical Center. ALS patients face numerous challenges in their daily routines, relying heavily on constant personal assistance and care from family and close friends. Thanks to the establishment of the Mike Rucker ALS Care Fund, ALS patients and families treated by the ALS Center can receive meaningful financial support for this invaluable service, helping them cope with all the challenges they must face on a daily basis
  • The PinStripes Fund
    This fund supports initiatives of the Carolinas Neuromuscular / ALS-MDA Center that directly affect the comprehensive care of its patients and further advance research and treatment programs. Proceeds from PinStripes events and other designated gifts contribute to the growth of this fund.

Nursing Funds

  • Carolinas Nursing Endowment
    Initiated in the early 1990's in conjunction with the creation of Carolinas HealthCare System's Carolinas College of Health Sciences, this fund represents a collection of individual scholarship endowments for nursing scholarships benefiting students of The School of Nursing at The Carolinas College of Health Sciences.
  • CCHS Advancement Fund: Nursing & Allied Health Education
    One of the largest nursing education programs in North Carolina,Carolinas College of Health Sciences is the largest hospital based college in the state. Student scholarships as well as equipment, supplies, and faculty support are made possible by gifts to The Carolinas College of Health Sciences.
  • Mercy School of Nursing Fund
    Provides annual support for various individual scholarships awarded to meritorious students at Carolinas Healthcare System's Mercy School of Nursing.
  • Nurse Anesthesia Program Fund
    Supports capital improvements and programmatic advancements for Carolinas Healthcare System's Nurse Anesthesia School.
  • Nursing Education Fund
    Supports specialized education programs and conferences for Carolinas Medical Center nursing staff.

Pediatric Funds

    The Pediatric Cancer Research Advancement Fund is dedicated to advance Phase I and Phase II Clinical Trials at Levine Children's Hospital and provide the most advanced treatment to children of the Carolinas.  
  • Valya E. Visser Endowment for Pediatric Education
    This Endowment honors Valya E. Visser, M.D., past chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Carolinas Medical Center, for her insightful leadership and commitment to the care and healing of children. Donations will help enhance education and research opportunities for pediatric residents and faculty at CMC and Levine Children's Hospital. 
  • Child Life Fund
    Supports essential recreational and educational programs conducted for hospitalized pediatric patients by the Child Life staff of Levine Children's Hospital.
  • The Children's Fund
    The Children’s Fund benefits programs and services at Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH). Funds are used to sustain, enhance, and expand the pediatric and newborn programs that LCH provides the community.
  • Joining Hearts Pediatric Cardiology Fund
    Supports the advancement of pediatric cardiology programs and research at Carolinas Medical Center and Levine Children’s Hospital. While promoting educational opportunities for caregivers and physicians, the fund also positively influences the level of care provided to children suffering from congenital pediatric cardiac conditions. Additionally, the fund helps to provide support programs for families of pediatric cardiac patients.
  • LCH Cardiac Intensive Care Fund
    This fund supports key elements of patient care and patient / family support related to the Ricky Hendrick Centers for Intensive Care at Levine Children’s Hospital.
  • Levine Cardiac Kids Fund
    This Fund benefits Levine Cardiac Kids, a support group for children with Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) and their families. This group serves as a forum for sharing experiences and building relationships; seeks to educate families on pertinent issues related to heart-health, treatments, and coping strategies; and creates awareness of CHD within the community.
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Fund
    Supports equipment improvements, furnishings enhancements, specialized nursing education, and patient/family support programs associated with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within Levine Children's Hospital.
  • Pediatric Cancer Fund
    Supports patient/family support activities, capital improvements, and research programs associated with Carolinas Medical Center's Pediatric Oncology division.
  • Julia's Rainbow Fund
    Named in honor of Julia Nesbitt, the fund supports pediatric cancer programs and pediatric cancer families associated with Levine Children's Hospital.

Surgery/Transplant Funds

  • Carolinas Transplant Center Fund
    Chiefly supports research and education programs associated with liver, kidney, heart and other transplant programs of the Transplant Center at Carolinas Medical Center.
  • CLASP Fund
    Supports minimally invasive surgical education and research activities conducted by Carolinas Medical Center's Carolinas Laparoscopic and Advanced Surgery Program (CLASP).
  • Nalibotsky Family Heart Transplant Fund
    Established by the family of heart transplant patient Philip Nalibotsky in 2003, this fund chiefly supports education and patient outreach activities to advance CMC’s Heart Transplant Program.
